Sheath update

This is an update to the review provided a few weeks back. I had a concern that the sawback was damaging the sheath by tearing at the material--

After 4 more outings, I can conclude the material coming out of the sheath was probably excess material or thread, as it now draws smoothly, without snags.

Again, price-point is key here. For about $8, you get solid protection for you and your knife. Not glamorous; instead, straight forward, no nonsense protection at a great price. For the price, I change my rating to 5 from 4 stars. Another great offering.

My sheath was purchased for my 18 sawback machete. As with the machete, price-point set the standards of expectation for this product. Within this standard, the sheath is functional with some good and bad points, relative to my machete.

On the good side, the sheath is light, quiet, covers the blade completely, has a belt loop, is riveted, and reinforced at the opening.

On the down side, with the sawback feature of my machete, within 2 days, my sheath started to fray at the back of the opening as a result of the saw teeth rubbing when withdrawn. If this will continue to fray, I cannot say. I have noticed [after a week], the rubbing has stopped, so perhaps, there was some knotting of thread or bulk of material on the inside.

I cannot help but to believe this sheath would be 10x better if it simply had the same type of plastic insert as do the other nylon sheaths offered by Ontario-- such as with the RAT and Ranger series. This would completely eliminate any abrasion issues.

Overall-- for $8, it should last a while for a weekend worrier such as myself and I recommend the purchase. If I decided my machete were to see heavy use, I'd look for one of the original military machete sheaths which are rubberized with a built in blade sharpener.
