Editor's Review (May 2010/Camping Knife Feature):
Everybody needs a machete when they go camping. Machete's are the ideal camping knife because they serve so many purposes. Machete's will cut through thick brush, chop thru branches and dead wood to use in your campfire and they're overall just great for chopping. We have the perfect camping machete - Ontario's model 8514 field machete is a little over 23 inches in length (18" is the machete blade) with a black D handle. The D Handle is perfect for camping tasks, because this machete is a bit hefty and long and the D handle gives more grip control. The 18" D Handle Machete is available with an orange D handle which give it more visibility (so you can spot it easily). The Ontario 18" Field Machete is a high quality machete for shockingly, under $20. This field machete doesn't come with a sheath, but you can pair it with Ontario BSH18 Machete Sheath. It's American made with very reasonable pricing It's great steel from a historic company. I snap up any blade I can get with Ontario stamped on it.

had to find replacements for the Barteaux
( Barteaux went out of business )
machetes i've used for many years , wanted a
USA made product - hard to do nowadays
the Ontario machete 'feels' a little
different but is an acceptable replacement
the choice of a black/orange handle is a plus
i would rate it as good as the Barteaux
AND the prices are good !

I was pleased to see the handle is molded as a solid piece onto the tang of the blade. No way it's coming apart or loose. The 3/16" blade has good weight to it. It cleans up well too after heavy use. I wouldn't change anything. Quality gear.

Machete arrived quickly and feels and seems to be sturdy and good quality material. Product arrived reasonably sharp but I did put a better edge which is now very sharp

i spend lots of time in woods evaluating my timber tracts and lots of time scouting for wildlife and for years have carried a machette. a friend gave me one of these several years ago and immediately it became the only one i use. i have 2 trucks and 2 four wheelers and have one mounted on each. they also make great gifts for my outdoorsman friends
