The Ontario RAT 3 fixed blade knife features a 3.5" 1095 Carbon Steel blade that is .125" thick. The canvas Micarta Handle on the RAT 3 knife looks rugged, but is smooth and offers a steady grip. The RAT 3 knife is offered with a molded sheath that includes a boot clip and TekLock attachment. A lanyard hole at the butt of the RAT 3 knife offers another carrying option.

The RAT 3 knife comes in several variations, with the Black or Foliage Green Sheath and with a Plain or Serrated Edge.

The Ontario RAT 3 knife is made in the USA.

Editor's Review: Jeff Randall Designed Rat 3 (Ontario Model 8633) (Green Sheath, Serrated Edge)

First of all, the photo of the RAT 3 knife makes the handle look somewhat green, when it's actually more of a tan color. The Rat 3 knife is a small to medium sized fixed blade knife that would be ideal for anyone with smaller hands (4.3" handle). The blade is adequate for most cutting tasks and has a nice shape to it. An epoxy powder coat on the blade gives it some texture and offers added blade protection and no glimmer. I love that the RAT 3 knife is full tang  -- it feels very strong in the hand and it has the skull crusher pommel (ouch!).

The RAT 3 Kydex Sheath holds the knife very tightly, so you can carry it in an inverted position withouth the knife falling out. You actually have to push in the opposite direction on the sheath with your thumb while pulling the knife out. Another cool aspect of the RAT 3 Knife is the Tek-Lok Belt Mounting system that's included with the purchase of the RAT 3. For those of you who don't know what the Tek-Lok is, it is an attachment that secures to your belt (fits a variety of sizes) and the secures to the RAT 3 Sheath. This allows you to carry the RAT 3 on your belt instead of just the pocket. Of course the sheath for the RAT 3 also has holes so you can carry it as a neck knife.

  1. Don't be fooled by its size!

    Posted by LVPG2010 on 19th Jul 2011

When I first opened the box, I was disappointed. The knife looked smaller than I imagined. If I had seen it in a retail store, I'd have walked by it without another thought--

But, after using it for the past months, it has become my favorite EDC knife, replacing my folders whenever possible. For all the things I was initially disappointed, have become the knife's best attributes. Strapped to my belt, it is hardly noticeable. The physical strength of the knife is far superior to a folder, giving you greater confidence in your cutting tasks. It is a perfect compliment to a larger survival knife or parang.

The sheath/tech-lock make the knife a joy to carry in any position. I usually have it strapped to my belt, but will also strap it, upside-down, to my shoulder strap of my backpack-making it hang like a neck-knife.

The RAT 3 carves well, splits kindling well and is great for cutting open packages. Don't let its small size put you off. You will get more use from this knife than any fixed blade you have...simply because you will have it with you more often.
